What It Is
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It was developed specifically to protect mitochondrial function and is one of the most studied mitochondrial therapeutics in development. It has been in multiple Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials for heart failure and kidney disease.
What It Does
SS-31 protects mitochondrial structure and function, reduces oxidative stress, improves ATP production, protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury, reduces inflammation, and has shown remarkable effects on age-related mitochondrial decline. In animal studies it reversed age-related muscle weakness and improved exercise capacity significantly.
How It Works
SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is essential for the structure and function of the electron transport chain. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 protects the electron transport chain, reduces electron leak (which generates free radicals), and improves ATP synthesis efficiency.
Who Benefits Most
People with mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic fatigue, or poor cellular energy production. People with heart failure or cardiovascular disease. Athletes looking to optimize mitochondrial function and exercise capacity. Anyone interested in longevity and protecting against age-related mitochondrial decline.
Protocol and Dosing
Typical dose: 1 to 5 mg injected subcutaneously once daily. Cycle length: 4 to 12 weeks. Can be used longer term for chronic mitochondrial support.
| Vial Format | Total mg | 1 mg dose | 5 mg dose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard vial | 10 mg | 0.1 mL / 10 units | 0.5 mL / 50 units |
Cautions
Well tolerated in clinical trials. May cause mild injection site reactions. Limited long term human safety data outside of clinical trials. Use under practitioner supervision. Not recommended during pregnancy.
Pairs Well With
NAD+ for comprehensive mitochondrial optimization through complementary mechanisms. MOTS-C for additional mitochondrial and metabolic support. Glutathione for antioxidant support alongside mitochondrial protection.
