What It Is

MT-1 (Melanotan I, Afamelanotide) is a synthetic analog of alpha-MSH that selectively activates MC1R (melanocortin 1 receptor). It is FDA-approved in Europe for erythropoietic protoporphyria and has been studied for skin protection, tanning, and anti inflammatory effects.

What It Does

MT-1 stimulates melanin production in the skin, providing a natural tan and UV protection. It also has anti inflammatory effects, reduces appetite modestly, and has been studied for its protective effects against UV-induced DNA damage. It is more selective than MT-2 and does not produce the sexual side effects associated with MT-2.

How It Works

MT-1 activates MC1R receptors in melanocytes, stimulating the production and distribution of eumelanin (dark pigment) throughout the skin. This provides photoprotection by absorbing UV radiation before it can damage DNA. The anti inflammatory effects are mediated through MC1R activation in immune cells.
