What It Is
Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant, produced naturally in every cell. It is a tripeptide made from glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. Levels decline with age, chronic illness, poor diet, and environmental toxin exposure. Restoring glutathione levels is one of the most fundamental interventions in functional medicine.
What It Does
Glutathione neutralizes free radicals, supports liver detoxification, reduces inflammation, improves immune function, protects mitochondria, and supports cellular repair. It is used clinically for detoxification support, chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, and anti aging protocols.
How It Works
Glutathione directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species and regenerates other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. It supports Phase II liver detoxification by conjugating toxins for excretion. It also regulates immune cell function and reduces inflammatory cytokine production.
Who Benefits Most
People with chronic illness, autoimmune disease, or high toxic burden. Anyone with fatigue, brain fog, or poor detoxification capacity. People undergoing heavy metal chelation. Athletes with high oxidative stress from training. Anyone interested in longevity and cellular health.
Protocol and Dosing
Typical dose: 200 to 600 mg injected subcutaneously or intravenously. IV delivery has the highest bioavailability. Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week. Oral and sublingual forms are also available but have lower absorption.
| Route | Typical Dose | Frequency | Bioavailability |
|---|---|---|---|
| IV | 600 to 1200 mg | 2 to 3x per week | Highest |
| Subcutaneous | 200 to 400 mg | 2 to 3x per week | High |
Cautions
Generally very well tolerated. High doses may cause mild GI upset with oral forms. IV administration should be done slowly. Not recommended during pregnancy without medical supervision.
Pairs Well With
NAD+ for comprehensive cellular energy and antioxidant support. KPV for additional anti inflammatory effects. BPC-157 for gut healing alongside systemic antioxidant support.
